Is Honey Better Than Sugar?

Is Honey Better Thank Sugar? People sure talks about it like it is.

In fact, people talk about all different kinds of sugar as if there are real metabolic differences.

People talk about it like you, the person in charge of your body, is smarter than your body and you have to referee everything that goes in your mouth.

But you don’t.

Your body is super smart and mostly, we just have

to get out of our own way.

Check this out from Marion Nestle’s blog http://www.foodpolitics.com/2014/05/hfcs-politics-continued-endlessly/. The most recently at the White House during the annual Easter Egg Roll, and involved the First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS), Michelle Obama.

Meet Marc Murphy, a chef, drizzling honey over a fruit salad:

MURPHY: “Honey is a great way to sweeten things, it is sort of a natural sweetener.”

FLOTUS: “Why is honey better than sugar?”

MURPHY: “Our bodies can deal with honey…The high-fructose corn syrup is a little harder to … I don’t think our bodies know what do with that yet.”

FLOTUS: “Did you hear that?  Our bodies don’t know what to do with high-fructose corn syrup. So we don’t need it.”

OK class.  It’s time for a lesson in basic carbohydrate biochemistry.

  • The sugars in honey are glucose and fructose.
  • The sugars in HFCS are glucose and fructose.
  • Table sugar is glucose and fructose stuck together, but quickly unstuck by enzymes.

The body knows perfectly well what to do with glucose and fructose, no matter where it comes from.

The real problem is too much sugar and with all the hidden and added sugars in our foods it’s hard NOT to eat too much sugar.

How much is too much sugar?

It doesn’t matter, you’re not going to measure it out by the teaspoon because, as they say, ain’t nobody got time for that.

Just limit it. Get rid of soda. Try not to eat sweets until the weekend. Stop giving kids sweets after sporting events or if you must, give them a Tootsie Pop and water and say, “Good Game!”
